Faux Fur Knit Slippers

Want to make some seriously squishy quick slippers?  Check out the free knit pattern and method in this post!  It includes an optional crochet sole.

Inspiration

I picked up this yarn from Yarn Canada, not knowing exactly how squishy it was.  And guess what y’all?  It’s SO SOFT AND SQUISHY and is actually really fun to work with.  Want to know why?  Because it’s very forgiving and sometimes us fibre artists just need something simple and forgiving from time to time, am I right?

I played with it a bit, thinking of the obvious applications for it… pillows… stuffies.  But then I dropped it and accidentally stepped on it and I had a lightbulb moment… SLIPPERS!!!  Who doesn’t love something super soft and comfy on their feet?  I checked Ravelry and didn’t see any slipper projects with the yarn listed yet so I figured I’d give it a go!  My step-by-step guide is below, please enjoy!

Materials

  • Go for Faux yarn, 1 ball
    • I got mine from Yarn Canada, delivered right to my door!
    • Mine are made in the Bear colourway
    • I had very little leftovers from 1 ball so maybe grab 2 just in case! (100 g / 64 yds – 6-bulky)
  • 8mm circular needles, I knit big so went down a size from the recommended 9mm but you can play with the needle size based on the fit of the slippers as you get going
  • Optional worsted weight yarn for add-on soles and a 5mm crochet hook
  • Scissors, tapestry needle for finishing

Playing with the yarn, it was definitely easier to knit than to crochet, simply because it’s not straightforward to find the crochet stitches.  I had to feel around when crocheting with it to find each stitch so it was laborious.  Switching to knitting made it at least easy to track each stitch to make it a super fun, quick project!!

Slipper Pattern (knit)

It’s more of a recipe than a pattern, I ad-libbed based on standard toe-up sock knitting principles with a few modifications.

Cast on:

Turkish cast on (reference), I did a slip knot, 2 wraps and one half-wrap to end up with 4 stitches on each side of the circular needle (8 st total)

Toe Shaping:

I did one set of increases using kfb on the second and second-last stitches on each needle, ending up with 6 stitches per needle (12 st total)
To adjust for a bigger size, you could do an additional round of increases to end up with 16 st total but it may be too big based on this bulky yarn!

Foot:

I knit straight until I was ~1″ from my heel, around 20-22 rounds, using stockinette stitch in the round (all knits) using a long circular set of needles.  It works up quickly with only 12 stitches per round!

Heel:

I did a gusset heel, although I’m sure a short row heel would work too, either way I ended up with holes that needed to be stitches when weaving in ends.  The nice thing with the heel is that this yarn doesn’t show garter st. vs. stockinette st. so there’s no purling required!  Just do knit stitches on the RS and WS when knitting rows and it’s totally fine!

Leg:

I knit straight for a few more rounds in stockinette, just enough to clear my ankles. I love being able to try on toe-up socks while they’re in progress!  The circular needle method is great for that!

Cuff:

For the final round, I did a kfb in each stitch around to make the cuff.  I then used Jeny’s surprisingly stretchy bind-off.

Finishing:

Weave in loose ends, including
Be sure not to pull the weaved ends too tight or they will restrict the slipper from properly getting on your foot!

I wanted the full slipper to be the super soft faux fur.  However, I decided that I wanted to add a sole for durability on my hardwood floors, otherwise the faux fur might get worn down when I wear them daily!!

Sole Pattern (crocheted)

I used a worsted weight yarn from my stash (Bernat Super Value, discontinued colour that I bought years ago) and a 5mm hook.  Note this was made to fit my foot, which is a women’s size 8.5 approximately… don’t get me started on how pregnancies changed my foot sizes!

Base Round: Ch 15, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc to last ch, 5 hdc in last ch.  DO NOT TURN, continue on bottom of ch, hdc to last ch, 4 hdc in last ch, sl st into first ch.
Round 1: Ch 2, hdc until you reach the corner stitches (5 hdc), hdc in next 2 st, 3 hdc in next st, hdc across to other corner (5 hdc), hdc in next 2 st, 3 hdc in next st, hdc, sl st into ch
Round 2: Ch 2, hdc until you reach the corner stitches (3 hdc), hdc in next st, 3 hdc in next st, hdc across to other corner (3 hdc), hdc in next st, 3 hdc in next st, hdc, sl st into ch
Round 3: Ch 2, hdc until you reach the corner stitches (3 hdc), 2 hdc in next st, 3 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc across to other corner (3 hdc), 2 hdc in next st, 3 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc, sl st into ch
Round 4: Ch 2, hdc until you reach the corner stitches (3 hdc), 2 hdc in next st, 3 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc across to other corner (3 hdc), 2 hdc in next st, 3 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc, sl st into ch

Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.  Stitch in place on the bottom of the slipper and enjoy!!
